The International Federation of Journalists, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and the Association of Caribbean Media Workers have been advised of the current stand-off between media in Jamaica and the government over the conduct of Jamaica Labour Party member Everald Warmington.

The international media community was advised that the acts of blatant intimidation by the Jamaican politician have impacted the ability of the Jamaican media to pursue stories on the integrity of the former government member who was in breach of the Jamaican Constitution. Journalists cannot operate in an atmosphere where public officials can use verbal abuse to intimidate and prevent the pursuance of the truth.

Mr. Warmington last week blasted journalists who attempted to question him on his sitting in parliament illegitimately, knowing that he had dual citizenship and was in breach of the Jamaican Constitution.

Members of the Press Association of Jamaica and the Media Association met with government officials on the matter and were not assured that any action will be taken to ensure that this level of intimidation is curtailed.
