Lydia Rose, General Manager, Jamaica Association of Composers, Authors & Publishers (JACAP)

Ms. Rose advised that JACAP, which is being restructured, is a Collective Management Organization for Composers, Authors and Publishers. Discussions included JACAP’s intention to review the Royalty rates. MAJ suggested that they would need to approach media houses individually. However, they would peruse the contract to determine whether the contract can be addressed via MAJ as a body.

The Minister of National Security visited with the Heads of Media and made a presentation sharing data on crime which showed that Jamaica stood in 4th place worldwide in crimes.  He advised that they were using operational and legislative methods to solve crimes as well as creating campaigns to raise awareness.  Another campaign focussing on lottery scams was being planned. They will be soliciting the support of other Ministries, private sector organizations, civil society, the entertainment industry and the media.

The Media Association Jamaica Limited presented a Leadership seminar entitled "Leading with Vision and Purpose: Maximizing Vitality and Engagement" for Executives on January 30, 2013 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The Keynote Speaker was Professor Michelle Buck, Clinical Professor of Management and Organizations, from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.

Crime Stop (Prudence Gentles, Michael Hirst)

The representatives from Crime Stop provided information on calls received reporting crimes, arrests made and illegal firearms recovered between 2009 and 2012.  A large number of calls were received in January 2009, June 2010, April 2011 and January 2012 (June 2010 showing the most calls received between 2009 and 2012).  129 arrests were made and over 50 illegal firearms were recovered in 2010.  They asked the media to air their programmes earlier in the day and preferably before holidays.  An Ad Campaign would be launched in January.

Northern Caribbean University (Dr. Marilyn Anderson, Vice-President, Academic Administration and Ms. Elaine Oxamendi-Vicet, Chairperson, Department of Communication Studies)

Regarding the media programme that NCU offers, Dr. Anderson and Ms. Oxamendi-Vicet assured that every effort was made to guarantee that graduates are marketable.  They have favourable interactions with the media and request more assistance with hands-on training. The four-year B.A. degree in Mass Communication includes subjects such as: Fundamentals of Journalism, Fundamentals of English Language, Advertising, Public Relations, Media Entrepreneurship, Outside Broadcast, Event Planning, Web Designing and Writing for Foreign Media.  Other degree programmes being offered are Film Animation and Graphics; Digital Media; and Graphic Designing.
